So did we like it?
The LC20-M is a case that could best be described with one word: potential. There are a lot of things that this case offers that you don't see much of in the sub-$250 price range, and it ties them together better than many more expensive cases. With that being said, I just can't help but feel a lack of polish to this model - it just doesn't feel like Silverstone quite put in the finishing touches to really set this apart on the shelf. The worst part is, it's all little things: grommets, a couple of well-placed holes, some better software.
Of course, what that means is that for someone who's got just a little dedication to making this what it
could be, it's a case that frankly would be hard to beat. Five quid and a dremel would make this case shine well beyond its price-point, and it's one of the few cases I have seen that would be an excellent modding case in an HTPC form.
Because of the little missed details, I can't say I could give the LC20-M the
bit-tech Award of Excellence. But for the frequent readers of
this site, who have some modding potential in their blood, I can very safely give it a recommendation. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a slimline HTPC that you can use out of the box, you should shop elsewhere.
Pros- Excellent modding potential
- Very sturdy build, good for high traffic areas like living rooms
- Will stand out just enough to get noticed in the entertainment center
- Excellent airflow and temperature control with few to no excess fans
- Built-in VFD and IR are not only excellent looking, but very functional with a little software help
Cons- Lacks the 'little things' that one would expect in a $250 case
- Paint job can scratch fairly easily
- Included software is difficult to use and poorly designed
